Everything has an origin story, right? Dental techniques didn’t simply spring from the ground one day, that’s for sure! Each treatment can be traced through history to a specific origin point. In looking back, you’ll see that cosmetic dentistry has had some, let’s say interesting developments through the years. If you’d like to know just how far this crazy-popular field has come, keep reading!
Strange Teeth Whitening Magic
Almost everyone wants whiter teeth, so it’s not too surprising that civilizations have been investing in dental stain removers for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians had the earliest teeth whitening method in recorded History. They used ground pumice and vinegar, mixing the ingredients into a solution to be brushed over teeth.
In sharp contrast, the Romans used human urine! While technically this was a scientifically sound solution, you’re probably relieved that modern dentists use ADA and FDA approved peroxides that are much safer for your precious teeth.
Not-So-Cosmetic Restorations
Metal materials have been used in dentistry since the 1800’s, but you’re probably most familiar with restorative applications. In the 1970’s, dentists created fillings, crowns, and bridges from gold or silver amalgams. These proved to be effective repairs – just not the most pleasing to the eye. Plus, metal restorations often contain small amounts of mercury!
The 1990’s brought the perfect storm for innovation in the form of technological advancements and the mercury scare. Dentists were able to craft restorations out of composite resins instead. Today, you wouldn’t be able to tell these tooth-colored materials apart from natural teeth.
Porcelain Veneers: Born to Be a Star
This Hollywood favorite can trace its beginnings back to the 1930’s. A local Californian dentist who worked closely with movie stars needed a way to cosmetically enhance his patient’s smile for a shoot. The good doctor was finally able to develop a shell-like façade and adhere it to his patient’s teeth for a consistent, picture-perfect look.
While these early veneers were only temporary, they were instantly popular among the rich and famous. Dentists continued to improve upon the method until they were practical and cost-effective enough to be marketed towards the general public. Now they can last up to 15 years with proper care and look better than ever!
Back to The Present
You’re probably thankful that nowadays it goes without saying that human urine should come nowhere near your teeth. Don’t let that be the only take-away that sticks out, though! Time and technological advancements have made cosmetic dental treatments better and more affordable than ever. If there’s a flaw marring your pearly whites that you’d rather do without, contact your dentist. They’ll help you choose the best option for you and your teeth.
